General Information
The Health Information Technician professional is the member of the health care team responsible for gathering, processing, storing and facilitating the use of patient information. The Health Information Technician professional is also responsible for organizing, analyzing, and evaluating medical records; compiling administrative and health statistics; coding symptoms, operations, procedures, diseases and other therapies; utilizing various storage and retrieval systems; and insuring confidentiality by controlling use and release of medical records.
The Health Information Technology (HIT) Program at Tyler Junior College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates from the two-year associate degree Health Information Technology Program are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) examination given by the American Health Information Management Association.
The HIT Program will be offered online beginning in the Fall of 07. The incoming freshmen will be able to take all curriculum courses online, if desired. Please refer to the HIT Program Online Curriculum and Additional Online Course Information page for more important information concerning the online program.
Please review the Application/Placement Policies page for information concerning the application process and point information. You must make application and be accepted into the Program in order to take the HITT designated courses. Placement into the program is awarded to individuals based on consideration of all admission data. A limited number of students can be accepted into each class.
This information is for students who have taken some courses within the curriculum and wish to know if these courses will transfer into the program. Also included is important information for those students who wish to receive credit for acquired HIT related credentials (CCS, CPC, CPC-H). Some courses within the curriculum also have time limits. Please review the Course Credit and Course Transfer Policies page for this information. This information can be confusing. Please contact the Program Chair before making the assumption that addition courses will transfer into the program.
