Health Information Technology
(formerly Medical Record Technology)
The Health Information Technician professional is the member of the health care team responsible for gathering, processing, storing and facilitating the use of patient information. The Health Information Technician professional is also responsible for organizing, analyzing, and evaluating medical records; compiling administrative and health statistics; coding symptoms, operations, procedures, diseases and other therapies; utilizing various storage and retrieval systems; and insuring confidentiality by controlling use and release of medical records.
Students successfully completing the two-year
program are eligible to receive an associate in applied science
degree in Health Information Technology and apply for the Registered
Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. The program is accredited
by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Educational
Programs in cooperation with the Council on Accreditation of the
American Health Information Management Association. All required
courses of the HIT program must be completed with a C or
better in order to progress to the next level course.
