DESCRIPTION OF INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS

#1 - DESCRIPTIVE LIST (WORTH 50 POINTS)

Complete the exercise described in the beginning of Chapter 4 (p. 107). Follow the text's directions. Here is a summary of the steps:

1. Make a list of 10 words or phrases that describe the most important features (character-wise and physically) of who you are.

2. Rank order your list.

3. Mentally picture yourself.

4. Keeping your mental image in focus, subtract one item at a time - visualizing how different you would be without that characteristic.

5. How do you feel after completing this exercise? What did you learn about yourself?

Turn in for credit:

1. Your ranked descriptive list (Step #2)

2. Your written report of how you felt after trying the exercise and what you learned about yourself. (Step #5)

#2 - CLASS EXERCISES (WORTH 50 POINTS) and CLASS PARTICIPATION
(WORTH 100 POINTS)

From time to time during the semester, your instructor will ask you to complete various class exercises and forms.  You will be awarded up to 50 points for how well you participate in these class activities.  Punctuality and thoroughness of completion as well as your attitude and productive class participation will be the main criteria for this subjective grade.

How well you interact with your classmates during the class exercises and assignments and how well you ask and answer questions during class discussions will be the main determinant of your Class Participation grade.  Once again, your attitude and overall productiveness will be the main criteria for this subjective grade.

#3 - PERSONAL CREST (WORTH 150 POINTS)

Each student will design a "Personal Crest" (like a 'family crest', but this is just for you) -- one that represents you as completely as possible. You may cut out magazine pictures, draw things free hand or whatever. (Artistry is NOT a criterion for the grade.) DO NOT HAVE YOUR NAME OR PHOTOGRAPH ON THE CREST ANYWHERE.

Here are some guidelines to help you complete your project:

1. Use a standard size poster board, or some similar material.

2. Every picture, word, and color used should be representative of you.

3. Be sure to include:

a. WHAT THINGS YOU LIKE TO DO MOST.

b. WHAT THREE THINGS YOU'D LIKE PEOPLE TO SAY ABOUT YOU.

c. WHAT YOU THINK YOUR BEST ATTRIBUTE IS (SOME FACET OF YOUR PERSONALITY.)

d. WHAT YOU WOULD DO IF YOU HAD ONLY ONE YEAR LEFT TO LIVE.

e. WHERE YOU FEEL MOST AT HOME.

On the discussion day, I will bring the crests to class and display them around the room. Each of you will have time to examine them and see if you can guess whose is whose. Then, on a volunteer basis, some will orally explain their crests; others will turn in a written explanation of their crests.

Explanation of how each crest will be graded:

1. The complete crest is worth 100 points and will be graded based on how well it meets the criteria and assignment.

2. The "Self-Disclosure" explanation of the crest will be worth 50 points. This self-disclosure explanation may be done orally in front of the class or in writing. This part of the assignment should describe how you fulfilled the basic requirements of this assignment. You may also choose to disclose other information at will.

DESCRIPTION OF GROUP PROJECT

Requirements which each student must fulfill for the completion of his/her group project:

1. Involvement in an interpersonal communication group project that the student is really interested in and that will be of benefit to him/her, not a project that is meaningless busy work.  Class time will be given for discussion, research, preparation, and other work toward this project.

2. Participation with his/her group in a meaningful creative class presentation for the individuals' and group's "findings" and conclusions from the project.  Each group determines the type of creative presentation, which it will use during a pre-determined amount of class time, usually 20 minutes minimum and 45 minutes maximum.  The presentation should allow approximately ten minutes for end-of-presentation class questions and discussion from the class.  Grade worth 100 points will be given.

3. Peer Evaluation: A brief evaluation of each of your group members on the evaluation forms provided  by your instructor.  Average Grade worth 100 points will be determined by your instructor.

  1. Exam Questions: Three questions (exam type) with the three correct answers based on the content of your group's presentation to the class.  These questions and answers will be turned in on a date determined by the instructor.   These questions and answers will be worth a minimum of 6 points and a maximum of 24 points on your Final Exam (a 'take-home portion' of your exam).

  2. An annotated bibliography of the sources used during the preparation of the group’s presentation will be required of each individual student.  Three sources are a minimum for this part of the assignment.  The student may use the textbook as one of the sources.  Other sources may be obtained through Internet or library means.  Complete citations should be included on the annotated bibliography with a brief explanation (summary) of what information was found in this source.  Grade worth 50 points will be given for this assignment.
