Russell holds a bachelor of music education degree from West Texas A&M University, a Master of Education (Administration) also from WTAMU and has completed post-graduate studies in education administration at WTAMU and post-graduate studies at Michigan State University in Choral Conducting. He is an all-level certified music teacher and school principal.
While at WTAMU, he studied applied voice with Dr. Jo Ella Cansler and Dr. Cloyce Kuhnert, choral conducting with Dr. George Biffle, and piano with Dr. Denise Parr-Scanlin. In summer 2008, Russell was under the tutelage of Dr. David Rayl, Dr. Sandra Snow and Dr. Jonathan Reed at Michigan State University.
Russell joined Tyler Junior College in 2007. In addition to directing the college's vocal ensembles, he teaches studio voice lessons, music appreciation, ear training and sight singing, and serves as musical director for the annual college musical.
His choirs have been well received at venues throughout the East Texas Area. The choral performances have become increasingly popular on YouTube with thousands of views.
Russell has been sought after as an adjudicator for UIL Concert and Sightreading as well as UIL Solo and Ensemble and as a clinician with schools, churches and community choruses.
Prior to arriving at TJC, Russell served as the assistant choir director for Canyon High School. While there Russell taught the freshmen choir, Advanced Placement Music Theory, served as the assistant and accompanist for the other high school and junior high ensembles, and conducted the high school musicals. His groups were consistently awarded Sweepstakes awards at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contests. During his last year at CHS, Russell successfully authored a $45,000 grant proposal for the choirs and accompanied and assisted with the Women's Chorale performance at the 2007 Texas Music Educator Association Clinic/Convention.
He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and the Texas Choral Directors Association (TCDA) and has been honored in several Who's Who in America directories.
Russell lives in Tyler and serves as the music director for Our Savior's Lutheran Church (ELCA). Favorite pastimes include his family, politics, exercising, water sports, reading, cooking, and his ferocious Labrador-retriever, Sadie.
