Music Classes
Music Program Purpose

The primary purpose of the Music Program is to provide students seeking associate degrees or transfer credit fundamental training in performance, music theory, and music history. Additional purposes are to provide enrichment opportunities for all students and to offer cultural enrichment to the Tyler community through the presentation of varied public performances.

Class Piano
A class for beginners in piano using 16 place electronic piano lab. Classes are available for music majors and non-majors.

Music Appreciation
A foundation in enjoyment and understanding of music through the study of changes in Western music from the Middle Ages to the present time making use of recorded examples.

Music Fundamentals
An introduction to the elements of music and application of basic theory to the keyboard. Especially appropriate for those lacking a background in music theory or desiring an appropriate elective.

Music Literature
A general survey of the development of the art of music designed to provide a basic understanding of the principal periods and styles of music literature. Open to all students. Required of music majors.

Music Theory
The rudiments of music including scales, key signatures, meter and rhythm plus the harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and basic formal procedures of the music from 1600 to the present. Student compositions are performed in class. Required of music majors.

Musical Theatre Workshop
The study and performance of works from the music theatre repertoire with emphasis on all phases of techniques and procedures including participation in the musical production.

Private Lessons
Private lessons are available to music majors and others as well. TJC offers piano, voice, organ, harp, classical guitar, brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion.

Sight Singing and Ear Training
Rhythmic, harmonic and melodic dictation using computers. Sight-singing in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs. Required of music majors.

Sound Production Technology
In-depth survey of the concepts, problems and solutions in the areas of MIDI instruments, computer controlled sequencing and audio technology. Combines classroom theory with hands-on experience. An excellent enrichment course for all music students.
